Backing finished...

IMG_1862 After taking this quilt to the quilters where I usually pick out some backing fabric and then let them do their thing …. this time I really didn't like any of the backings (for this quilt) so I decided to bring it back home and piece one.

Now …. keep in mind that I had a limited amount of fabric with which I could put together a backing.

Too bad I didn't keep that in mind!!!

I knew I had 6 snowmen blocks left over and it sure looked like I would have plenty of both of the blues.  So I planned a quick layout and started cutting strips.   And sewing those blocks and strips together.  As I cut one strip after another I began to realize the fabric was dwindling fast.
UH OH!!  Maybe I had better start measuring.
I measured and remeasured and called my gals to find out exactly how many inches they needed all around the quilt.  And then I remeasured again and kept in mind that if I needed to I could always add an extender strip just to give them the extra inches they need (she suggested this for me.  Told me not to worry)  So I didn't and just kept merrily cutting and sewing away.

This is the backing all sewn and ready to take back to the girls.  Looks plenty big enough wouldn't you say.  Would you like to know how much fabric I had left?

2 x 7 inches of dark blue & 2 x 10 inches of light blue!

Whew!!

Off to the quilters.....

  1. Lucky you because it doesn't always work out that way and your back looks great too!

    1. Thanks Ellen. I know!! I was sure holding my breath on those last two cuts. I don't want to be that close again. haha

  2. I love that backing! I have been known to add muslin borders around the edges of a quilt before getting it on the frame because I've really cut it 'that' close! (the muslin just helps hold the quilt on the frame, they come off after quilting)

    1. That's exactly what my gal told me we could do. And not to worry. I'm confident that I have enough all around right now. Well.... I think I'm confident. haha But I'll find out this afternoon when I take it back to them.

  3. Lucky Lady!! You sure cut it close! - Geesh! - I HATE it when that happens - but your backing worked out very well. I probably would have come up short and had to "borrow" some fabric from the binding strips - ;))

    1. Binding?!?!?! Well snap! Now I'll have to go shopping.
      hahaha
JK. I knew I'd have to get more fabric but I can at least wait until later to go buy it.

  4. You are far luckier than I as I would have run out and needing the exact size pieces you had left over LOL. Don't sweat the binding, that is always where you can improvise :0)

    1. haha I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the other way around like you said.
And you are SO right Crispy. With that encouragement I'm going to go digging in my stash and improvise. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Thanks Jenni. Believe me, that's what I'm usually doing too. Or else I've bought way to much in the first place and then the rest just sits in my stash aging. LOL Thanks for stopping by.
